Neck pain effects 45% of Americans each year and is one of the most common reasons why people seek treatment at our clinic.
By far the most common cause of neck pain is the long-term effect of poor posture. Working overhead, sleeping in a bad position, working at a desk or computer, or just plain slouching is typically responsible. At its core, bad posture is a repetitive stress that gradually unbalances the muscles of your spine which in turn stress your spinal joints and cause them to mis-align and get stuck.
Neck pain may also be the result of a sudden injury due to an accident or fall in which the head is violently whipped forward and backward or side to side. These whiplash injuries result in over-stretching (sprain and strain) of the small muscles and ligaments that are crucial to the stability of your spine. Once this damage occurs your spine loses its ability to remain stable during normal movements and leaves you susceptible to further injury.
It may surprise you to learn that most neck problems don't start out painful. Low-grade signs of a problem, including aches and stiffness in the upper back and neck may be present for months before the condition becomes debilitating. Unfortunately many people ignore these low-grade symptoms, incorrectly assuming them to be normal.
Effective long-term relief from neck problems is possible when gentle re-alginment of the joints of the neck is combined with specific exercises designed to re-stabilize the muscles of the spine.
